Historians have debated back and forth as to the possibility of the Pict tribe indulging in either tattooing or body painting for nearly two centuries now, the root of their contentions lying in a single passage written millennia ago by Roman poet Claudian:
The first records of punching holes into your belly button come from histories of ancient Egyptian piercing practice. Interestingly, in their era, it was done as a display of wealth and beauty – some accounts also state that only the Pharaoh could have a navel piercing, and anybody else attempting to pierce their body in this place was attempting to impersonate or cheek the royalty – consequences were severe.
Liverpool Convention, still only in it's 3rd year spawns a new idea on every occasion. It was the first to come up with the idea of tattoo duels, pitting two tattooists and their willing victims against each other (and the clock) in theme based battle for the best tattoo. This year the organisers had the novel idea to launch the first UK Tattoo Industry Awards, free of influence, independent and voted for by the public.
